Shipping Container Costs Unpacked

How Much Does a Shipping Container Really Cost?

Thinking about buying a shipping container? Whether it’s for storage, a new business, or even a home, the first question on everyone's mind is: what’s it going to cost me? The price can vary a lot, and in this video, we're breaking down everything you need to know about shipping container costs in 2026.

First, let's talk about new versus used. A new, or "one-way," container has made just a single trip from the manufacturer. It's in pristine condition, making it perfect for projects where looks and longevity matter, like a home or office.

For a new 20-foot container, you're looking at around $2,000 to $2,400

Need more space? A new 40-foot, high cube container typically costs between $2,800 and $3,200

Now, if you're on a tighter budget, a used container is a fantastic option. They're graded by condition. "Cargo Worthy" means it is structurally sound and can be certified for international shipping, while "Wind and Watertight" is perfect for secure, dry storage.

Here is a chart outlining price ranges that apply to Used shipping containers in the first quarter of 2026:

Used Shipping Container Grade and Size Price Range 2026
20-foot Used – Cargo Worthy $1300 - $1600
20-foot Used – Wind & Watertight (WWT) $1025 - $1350
40-foot Used - Cargo Worthy $1650 - $2150
40-foot Used - Wind & Watertight (WWT) $1350 - $1650
40-foot Used - High Cube - Cargo Worthy $1750 - $2250
40-foot Used - High Cube - Wind & Watertight (WWT $1400 - $1800

So, why the price range? Several factors influence the final cost. The container's size and condition are big ones, as we just saw. But where you are located also plays a huge part.

If you're close to a major port or a logistics hub, you'll likely pay less. The further away you are, the more you'll have to factor in for transportation.

At Container Management, we have over 32 depot sites across the country to help keep those delivery costs as low as possible for you.

Want to turn that steel box into something special? Custom modifications like doors, windows, insulation, or even HVAC systems will add to the cost. The sky's the limit, and a custom build can be tailored precisely to your needs.

Finally, there are market conditions. Things like global supply chain stability and tariffs can cause prices to fluctuate. For 2026, the market for used containers is fairly stable, but new container prices could be impacted by international trade policies. That's why getting a current, personalized quote is so important.

As you can see, the cost of a shipping container isn't a single number. It depends on its size, condition, your location, and any customizations you need. It can feel like a lot to navigate, but you don't have to do it alone.
