Pickup or Delivery of Shipping Containers Near Savannah, Georgia

Buy Your Shipping Container and Choose a Pick-Up or Delivery Option

When you buy your shipping container, we’ll ask you to consider three delivery options:

  1. Pick up your shipping container.
  2. Receive your container delivery from us to a location within 200 miles of Savannah.
  3. Receive your container more than 200 miles from our Savannah Depot; you’ll need to lift the container off a flatbed truck.

1. Pick Up Your Shipping Container at the Savannah, Georgia, Depot.

Our Depot site is in the Savannah 31407 zip code area.

When you purchase your shipping container for pickup, we’ll give you a container release number. This number allows you or your container transport truck to access your purchased container(s) during the specified timeframe at our Savannah Depot.

2. Have Us Arrange Your Shipping Container Delivery Within 200 miles of the Savannah Depot

We’ll set up your shipping container delivery to your home or business location within 200 miles of the Savannah Depot. Then, we will deliver your shipping container and set it on the ground for you.

This delivery area includes the following locations:

  • City of Savannah
  • Southeastern Georgia halfway to Atlanta, Georgia, or Jacksonville, Florida (other shipping container Depots)
  • South Carolina halfway to Charleston, South Carolina, or Atlanta, Georgia

(If you are closer to Atlanta, Charleston, or Jacksonville, shipping from those depots may make more financial sense.)

3. Lift Off Your Container With Delivery Beyond 200 Miles From the Savannah Depot

We’ll set up your shipping container delivery to your home or business location beyond 200 miles.

For these deliveries, we use a flatbed truck broker. This option requires that you lift your container off the flatbed truck upon arrival.

This is the least expensive delivery option. For a 20-foot shipping container, you’ll need a forklift with 6-foot tines. For a 40-foot container, you’ll need a specialty forklift with 8-foot tines.

Shipping Container Costs

The cost of shipping containers can fluctuate widely depending on many factors. Generally, the following five dynamics influence the cost of your shipping container at any given time.

  • The depot location—some areas have a shipping container surplus; container costs may dip slightly in these regions. Other areas may have shipping container shortages; the costs can rise with the demand.
  • Your distance from the depot—your delivery cost will likely be higher if the delivery is 150 miles away compared to 10 miles away. However, we’ll help you find the best overall value. We’ll consider the shipping container cost itself plus the container delivery cost. We’re known for our deep experience and high-touch customer service. We’ll take the time to find what you need at the best value.
  • The size of the shipping container—all other factors being equal, a 40-foot shipping container tends to cost more than a 20-foot container. A 40-foot high-cube (HC) shipping container will cost more than a 40-foot standard-height container. However, some unique sizes may cost more—even if they are smaller.
  • The grade of the shipping container—all other factors being the same, the better the shipping container grade, the higher the cost. You may not need a “new” shipping container, depending on your use. A used cargo-worthy or wind-watertight will suffice. Rest assured; we never sell used “as is” containers. We work hard to ensure that you get the shipping container that best meets your project need or purpose without spending more than you need to.
  • The door and opening configurations. Double doors on one end of a shipping container are standard. To have double doors at both ends or on one side will necessitate a NEW shipping container and will have the corresponding NEW container price level.

Ocean Cargo Containers for Exports and Imports

Next, we explore the uses of shipping containers near Savannah, Georgia, and southeastern South Carolina.

One of the most significant uses of ocean cargo containers in Savannah is the most obvious—shipping cargo overseas. The growth of imports and exports through the Port of Savannah has been astronomical.

The Port of Savannah: A 280-Year History of a Sordid Past, Urban Decline, and a Stunning Rebirth

Early Trade at the Port of Savannah

The Port of Savannah opened its docks in 1744. By the late 18th century, it became a hub for the slave trade and agricultural exports from the plantations.

The Decline of Savannah and the Port of Savannah

By the mid-to-late 20th century, the waterfront had fallen into disrepair, and trade through the Port of Savannah had declined—until the 1990s.

Rebirth of a City and the Port of Savannah

In 1991, the Talmadge Bridge allowed larger ships to enter the channels. The Port of Savannah slowly transformed into a modern container port with a revitalized waterfront.

The Port of Savannah Today

Today, the waterfront and the Ports of Savannah and Brunswick have found new life and a promising future.

Fourth Largest U.S. Port

Considered the fastest-growing port in the United States, the Port of Savannah has recovered. It is now the fourth largest U.S. port, behind Los Angeles, Long Beach, and The New York/New Jersey ports.

In January 2023, Shipa Freight, a logistics company, reported that container volume in Savannah alone was 4.35 million TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units).

By contrast, its rival ports to the north, Georgetown and Charleston, SC, had 1.29 million TEUs in the same timeframe.

In July 2023, the Associated Press reported that annual overseas shipping at the Port of Savannah hit 5.4 million TEUs, down slightly from 5.8 TEUs in 2022—yet impressive.

The Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP)

Savannah’s deepwater terminals include the Garden City and Ocean terminals.

The Port of Savannah has dedicated $973 million to deepen the Ocean channel. This has allowed the port to transport larger vessels and more cargo without waiting for high tides.

The Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP) phased project completion deadline is February 2026.

The channel deepening project in the Ocean Terminal has advanced Savannah’s capabilities—from its traditional lumber, paper, and steel exports—to a modern cargo container port. The port can now include those and expand to new cars, electronics, heavy machinery, and agricultural products.

The Port of Savannah has also invested in other modernization, including its technology infrastructure, commitment to environmental sustainability, and compliance with regulations and standards.

It ships directly to 200 ports worldwide.

How Companies in the Low Country Save Money on Exports

As an exporter, you can save money by owning your shipping containers.

This saves your money and time in two ways.

First, no per diem charge is necessary when your container remains at your or your customer’s facility.

Second, it avoids the cost of unloading and reloading goods at the destination port. By contrast, steamships usually require you to keep their steamship-owned containers at the port in countries where embargoes are in place.

At Container Management, we can help you make the import/export process work

Low-Country Manufacturers

Many businesses in the Savannah area buy and repurpose cargo shipping containers as storage containers. Some of these storage uses include:

On-site Storage of Goods and Raw Materials in Shipping Containers

Coastal Georgia has a strong tradition in manufacturing, with the following large companies topping the list:

  • Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation designs and manufactures advanced business-jet aircraft
  • JCB Heavy Construction Equipment, manufacturer of backhoes, excavators, tractors, and other heavy construction equipment
  • Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems develops services for advanced combustion-based solutions
  • International Paper manufactures paper products for business and industry
  • Briggs & Stratton is the world’s largest producer of engines for outdoor power and other heavy equipment
  • Georgia Transformer makes transformers for U.S. industries and exports
  • Orafol Americas creates vinyl graphic films and laminating films used in signage
  • Georgia Pacific manufactures building products made of cellulose, pulp for disposable diapers, corrugated shipping boxes, and consumer paper products
  • Imperial Sugar produces 100% pure granulated, brown, and powdered sugar

Some manufacturing companies import and export raw materials and finished products—cumbersome equipment and machinery. These Coastal manufacturers store raw materials, machine replacement parts, and finished products in shipping containers.

Shipping Container Offices and Workplace Storage Sheds

Additionally, Low Country businesses use climate-controlled shipping containers to stow paper records, stock replacement parts, and stockpile excess office furniture and equipment.

Construction Offices

Construction in the Savannah area is booming. Nearby Bluffton, South Carolina, is the fastest-growing town in South Carolina, growing 156% from 2010 to 2023.

Shipping containers have many purposes in construction. Construction containers offer numerous advantages. Shipping containers at a construction site can warehouse storage material or serve as a construction office. Repurposed shipping containers also can help foster safety at construction sites.

Shipping Containers for Self-Storage

Americans own a lot of stuff—about 300,000 items in each home. For many, self-storage is a good alternative when households want to declutter but aren’t ready to donate or discard items.

Storage Container Companies

The U.S. self-storage industry's annual revenue soared to $39.5 billion and is growing exponentially. By 2022, the number of storage facilities grew to 52,786—outstripping the 50,693 sum of Starbucks, McDonald’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, Pizza Hut, and Wendy’s restaurants combined.

Additionally, the low-lying Coastal Area around Savannah does not enable basement construction. Therefore, Georgians and South Carolinians need a place to store “stuff.”

South Carolina boasts about 6.02 square feet of storage space for every adult and child in the state. George has 5.82. Both are above the average 5.4 square feet per person

Many of those who buy shipping containers from us have storage businesses. They purchase the containers and then rent them to others.

Individuals also contact us to purchase containers for self-storage—especially Georgians and South Carolinians with the acreage and city permits that allow shipping containers.

What’s Stored in Those Shipping Containers

Holiday Storage in Shipping Containers

Holiday decorations grace many shipping containers, and 84% of Americans decorate for Christmas.

Fun fact: Do you know the most popular holiday decorations in Georgia and South Carolina, respectively? The Peach State residents favor Christmas trees. Those in the Palmetto State prefer to deck their halls with garland.

Other Shipping Container Storage Items

Besides holiday item storage in shipping containers, Americans store:

  • Hand-me-downs that don’t yet fit or are out of season
  • Inherited items that don’t have a place inside the home
  • Excess furniture after retirees downsize
  • Young adult children’s mementos and other leave-behinds
  • Household items when between permanent housing (e.g., during construction)

And in the Savannah area, construction is booming. The number of permits issued in Savannah rose 53% in 2022—a new record. Head toward Bluffton, South Carolina, a 20-minute drive, and you’ll spot residential (and commercial) buildings virtually springing from the earth overnight.

Shipping Container Homes and Shipping Container Vacation Rentals

One unique way to travel is to stay in a shipping container home. This modern chic shipping container retreat is just 10 minutes from Savannah.

Shipping Container Homes

Companies specializing in container modifications transform shipping containers into cozy homes or work studios. The stark outside often contrasts with the shiny décor inside

Shipping Containers Transform to Breweries, Patios, and Restaurants

Recreational fun spots are also a common repurposing of shipping containers. One “adult playground” and gathering place in Savannah is called Narcity. Starland Yard is Savannah’s food truck container par.
