Farmers Store Seeds, Grains, and More in Shipping Containers

Nearly two-thirds of Indiana is farmland. It’s no surprise, then, that savvy Indiana farmers have put shipping containers to use for them.

Farm Implement Storage

For example, farmers may store farm equipment, implements, or tractors in new and used shipping containers. This extends and expands the size and locations of their barns and reduces their overhead costs.

Seed and Grain Storage

Additionally, farmers have converted shipping containers into seed and grain siloes, similar to innovative agricultural projects described in our Cleveland shipping container applications. Modified with wooden bulkheads, these storage containers reduce spillage compared to traditional grain siloes. As a result, fewer seeds scatter to the ground. This deters rodents—especially mice and rats.

Ready to see even more creative uses? The next section explores how containers are repurposed across Indianapolis.

Creative Uses of Containers in Indianapolis and Nearby Areas

Besides farm storage, explore some creative ways that Indianans have repurposed steel shipping containers, which reflect trends across our broader shipping container sales locations.

  • Just-in-Time Christmas and Seasonal Storage

Big box stores often need additional warehouse space, especially during holidays and seasonal sales. To that end, we sell shipping containers to large retailers.

This enables them to restock their merchandise—not by waiting for a delivery to arrive—but simply by accessing the storage container in the parking lot behind or beside their store.

Likewise, an overflow of goods, such as patio tables, chairs, sun umbrellas, wading pools, and other spring or summer merchandise, can extend retail space in the store’s parking lot.

  • Outdoor Workspaces

Some Container Management, Inc. customers in Indiana and elsewhere buy three 40-foot containers. Placed in a U-shape and topped with a roof, this creates a workplace away from the weather elements.

  • Company and Personal Storage

Besides warehousing retail goods, storing farm equipment, and extending workspaces, companies use climate-controlled shipping containers to store paperwork, office equipment, and other items that no longer fit in office spaces.

Likewise, Americans have a lot of extra “stuff.” It’s estimated that we have enough self-storage units to average one storage unit for every 14 Americans. Self-storage is increasingly a big business in Indiana and throughout the United States.

  • Container Housing in the Indianapolis Area

Attainable housing in Fishers, Indiana. A luxurious boutique hotel in Indy’s Haughville neighborhood on the West Side. Environmentally friendly townhomes that list for $600,000 to $700,000 in the Kennedy-King neighborhood on the Northside. These are just a few diverse and innovative ways Indiana contractors transform steel shipping containers into living spaces.

  • Vertical Farms in Urban Indianapolis

Leafy greens are grown year-round on an urban farm on the Eastside of Indianapolis on East 10th Street. Farmer DeMario Vitalis grows up to 13,000 plants at one time in vertical towers—inside shipping containers. He controls the humidity, light, pH, nutrients, and temperature.

  • Restaurants, Pools, Event Spaces & More

Shipping containers are used for a variety of innovative entertainment purposes:

Restaurants and Brewpubs in Broad Ripple, on the North Side of Indy at Monon Yard.

Pools manufactured in Anderson, Indiana, Northeast of Indianapolis.

In 2020, a concert venue in Fountain Square in downtown Indianapolis moved outdoors. The owner turned shipping containers into a stage and an open-air concert venue.

  • The Cradle at Monon 30

An event space called The Cradle on the North Side of Indianapolis transformed an abandoned lumber yard into a weekend concert venue, free entrance, and the availability of food and drink purchases. The food vendors prepare and sell food out of repurposed shipping containers.

  • Artisan Food Market Places

AMP, an Artisan Food Market Place in the 16 Tech Innovation District of Indianapolis, bordered by White River, Fall Creek, and Indiana Avenue. It houses a barber shop, restaurants, coffee shop, deli, and numerous restaurants. AMP is built from customized shipping containers.

  • Bathrooms

Rustic weddings, concertgoers, and the Office of Public Safety (OPHS) have transformed shipping containers into portable public restrooms. The restrooms include wheelchair accessibility, flush toilets, and handwashing stations. In downtown Indy, the restrooms are outside the old city hall building near Alabama Street and E. New York Street.

What Our Clients Say

Frequently Asked Questions About Shipping Containers for Sale in Indianapolis

  • How Much Does a Shipping Container Cost in Indianapolis?

     Supply and Demand

Pricing fluctuates based on current supply levels at the depots that service our Indiana customers. When supply is high, prices often drop; when supply is tight, costs rise.

     Location Logistics

Your specific location plays a major role in the final delivered price. While you might be searching for "shipping containers Indianapolis," the actual container might come from a depot in:

    • Indianapolis, IN
    • Chicago, IL
    • Cincinnati, OH
    • Louisville, KY
    • Detroit, MI
    • Columbus, OH

We always source from the location that offers the most cost-effective solution for your delivery address.

     Condition and Modifications

    • The grade of the container significantly impacts the price.
    • A new "one-trip" container costs more than a used "wind and watertight" unit.
    • If you require modifications—such as specific door configurations or height variations (like High Cube containers)—this will affect your total investment.

At Container Management, Inc., we guide you through these options to ensure you make the best purchase decision based on your specific use case and budget.

  • Understanding Container Conditions: New vs. Used

Shipping container conditions include Wind and Watertight, cargo-worthy, and new "one-trip" status.

    • One-Trip: New containers are often referred to as "one-trip" containers. These are manufactured overseas, loaded with cargo once, and shipped to the US. They are the highest quality available on the secondary market and look nearly new, with very few dents or scratches.
    • Cargo Worthy (CW): This refers to a used container that is structurally sound and can be certified by a licensed surveyor for ocean shipment. They may have rust and dents, but their structural integrity is verified.
    • Wind and Watertight (WWT): Used shipping containers include options that are Wind and Water Tight. These are used containers guaranteed to keep wind and water out. They are perfect for static storage but may not meet the strict criteria for international shipping without repair.

We provide detailed descriptions of these grades to ensure you know exactly what to expect upon delivery.

  • Can I Inspect the Container Before Buying?

Many of our Indianapolis customers ask if they can visit the depot to pick out their specific unit.

We store our inventory in large, secure intermodal depots connected to broader freight and rail networks, where major steamship lines also maintain their equipment. Due to strict insurance regulations and safety liability issues, these facilities restrict access to employees only. It is not a retail lot where customers can browse inventory.

However, we bridge this gap by offering guarantees on the quality of the unit you receive, ensuring it matches the grade you purchased.

  • Do You Offer a Warranty Against Leaks?

Yes. We stand behind the quality of our products. All containers we sell—whether new or used—are guaranteed to be wind and watertight at the time of delivery. If a unit arrives with a leak or structural issue that compromises its watertight integrity, we address it. This guarantee provides peace of mind that your goods will remain safe and dry.

  • How Does Delivery Work in Indianapolis?

We provide a licensed, professional container delivery service for clients in Indianapolis, throughout Indiana, and in surrounding areas.

Because shipping containers are large and heavy, delivery requires specific planning. We help you navigate:

    • Truck Types: We use tilt-bed trucks that slide the container off gently at your site.
    • Clearance: We advise on how much height and width clearance is needed for the truck to maneuver.
    • Site Prep: We guide you on how to prepare the ground (gravel, concrete, or sturdy grass) to ensure the container sits level and doesn't sink.

From the moment you request a quote to the final drop-off, we manage the logistics so you don't have to worry about transport.

  • Do I Need a Permit to Place a Container on My Property?

Zoning laws vary significantly between the City of Indianapolis, Marion County, and other local municipalities.

    • Temporary vs. Permanent: Some areas allow containers for temporary use (like during construction) without a permit, while permanent placement may require one.
    • Zoning Restrictions: Residential areas often have stricter rules than industrial or agricultural zones.

We strongly recommend checking with your local planning or zoning department before purchase. Check local zoning laws before placing a container on your property. This is a critical local step that prevents potential fines or the need to move the container later.

  • How Can I Avoid Online Container Scams?

Unfortunately, online fraud involving shipping containers is on the rise. Scammers often post fake listings with prices that seem "too good to be true."

    Secure Payment Methods

One of the best ways to protect yourself is to use a secured credit card for your transaction. Credit card companies offer fraud protection that wire transfers and cash apps do not.

At Container Management, Inc., we prioritize your security. We do not pass on credit card processing fees to our customers, meaning you pay no extra charges for the safety of a credit card transaction.
