5 Ways To Use Shipping Containers at Construction Sites

Susan Nalevac • Feb 28, 2023

Many industries use shipping containers for functions other than shipping or storing cargo. Below, we’ll outline some practical ways construction sites can use shipping containers to make their worksite safer and more productive.

Equipment & Materials Storage

Perhaps the most basic and common way that a construction company can put old and used shipping containers to use is as storage facilities. Construction sites can contain a lot of valuable equipment and materials, so there’s always a worry when leaving these things at the site overnight.

Shipping containers make for logical storage solutions, as they’re transportable, spacious, and secure. The heavy steel doors and secure locks prevent thieves from stealing cargo at worldwide ports and can do the same for construction sites.

On-Site Temporary Office

One of the most common ways construction sites use shipping containers is as temporary, on-site offices. Construction companies need an office at or near the project site for managers and supervisors, but creating a new office for a short period is challenging.

For many years, construction companies used converted mobile trailer homes, but more companies today use converted shipping containers as offices. A converted shipping container office can be much roomier and more versatile than a trailer, and it’s easily transportable from one project site to another.

Employee Facilities

The supervisors and project bosses benefit from a place to congregate on-site, as do the workers. A climate-controlled facility can boost worker morale and productivity on a construction site, especially on hot summer days or chilly fall and spring mornings. The modified container can also become a breakroom with tables, a kitchen, lockers for storing belongings, and even beds to rest on break or stay overnight.

Bathrooms

Along with a breakroom, workers need a place to relieve themselves throughout the day. While portable toilets are common at construction sites, they’re not the most pleasant or comfortable facilities.

One alternative that some construction companies use is bathrooms in converted shipping containers. Storage containers can easily convert into bathrooms with all the necessary plumbing, toilets, and even showers for workers to use before or after a long day on the job.

First Aid Station

Another addition that any construction site could benefit from is a first aid station. Accidents and injuries occur all the time at construction sites, from stubbed toes and minor cuts to more significant wounds.

Having a dedicated first aid station in a converted shipping container gives the site a place with all necessary medical supplies where everyone can get care. Plus, on hot or cold days, the first aid station can provide supplies and information to help keep workers safe on the job.
