Choosing the Best Container for Your Shipping or Storage Needs

Susan Nalevac • Jun 23, 2022

Are you thinking of purchasing a shipping container for either ocean export or storage? Let us help you with our guide on how to choose the best container for your shipping or storage needs!

This overview will break down for you the most common types of shipping containers, their typical dimensions, and which container options are ideal for either shipping or storage.

Types of Shipping Containers

When you picture a shipping container, you probably envision a general-purpose container, as it’s the most common type and the one you’re most likely to see on a ship, truck, or train. It’s also known as a “dry container”, as it’s enclosed and coated in sealant to protect goods from the elements.

But that’s not the only type of container available. The flat rack container is similar, but the sides are collapsible, ideal for loading large goods like heavy machinery or cars. An open-top container is like a flat rack, but instead of convertible walls, the roof can open for goods to be lifted inside.

There are numerous other types of containers you can find for specific needs, including:

  • Double-door (“tunnel”) containers
  • High cube containers
  • Open side containers
  • Insulated containers
  • Half-height containers

Sizes of Shipping Containers

In terms of sizes and dimensions, you have fewer options. There’s a reason for that – and that is standardization. To make their transportation easier, by container specifications adhere to a set of standard dimensions; the two most common sizes for general purpose and other containers are 20-foot and 40-foot lengths.

The only difference between these two sizes is the length, as their height and width are identical. So, whether you choose a new 20-foot or 40-foot used shipping container, the height and width will be the same.

There are other containers with distinct heights, widths, and lengths, but they’re rarer and typically custom-made.

Containers for Shipping vs. Storage

Deciding which container is right for you will largely depend on your plan for its use. Do you need to transport cargo or securely store goods?

For shipping, you’ll want to explore the shipper-owned container (SOC) option. An SOC is a container owned by an individual or business who then pays the carrier to ship the container via freighter, truck, aircraft, or train.

In 1972, the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC) was developed to facilitate the international transport of containers by providing uniform international safety regulations.

Each container that is presented for ocean export must undergo a detailed inspection process ensuring that they meet rigorous industry Cargo Worthy standards and include current CSC plates for international transit.

If the purpose for your container is storage, then a new or used dry container is best. Your decision will revolve around whether you want a new or used container, and the best size to fit your storage site and your storage needs.

Whether it’s for shipping or storage,, choosing the best shipping container is straightforward: consider what you’ll use it for, and the answer will be clear!
