Why Choose a Shipping Container?

Shipping containers, also known as Conex boxes, offer a unique combination of strength, security, and versatility.  Originally built to withstand the harsh conditions of ocean transport, these steel boxes are an excellent solution for various applications.

  • Durability and Security:  Made from high-grade Corten steel, shipping containers are designed to be wind and watertight.  This makes them highly resistant to weather, pests, and theft, providing a secure environment for your valuables.

  • Cost-Effectiveness: Compared to traditional construction, shipping containers are an affordable alternative for storage or building.  A used container can provide secure, on-site storage for a fraction of the cost of building a shed or renting off-site storage space.

  • Versatility and Customization:  A shipping container is a blank slate.  It can be a simple storage unit or transformed into an office, workshop, or even a home.  With endless modification options, you can tailor a container to your exact specifications.

  • Portability: Need to move your storage or structure?  Shipping containers are designed for transport.  They can be delivered to your site and relocated as your needs change, offering a level of flexibility that permanent structures cannot match.

Step 1: Complete Our Quote Request Form

Our quote form is the first step.  It ensures we gather all the important details to provide an accurate price.  You'll need to tell us:

  • How many containers you need
  • Whether you prefer New or Used
  • If you require delivery
  • The delivery destination:  City, State, Zip Code
  • The grade of container you need
  • The intended use:  Storage or Export
  • Your email address and phone number

Step 2: You Receive Our Quote

We email you a quote on the same business day if we receive your request by 4:00 PM EST, Monday through Friday.  Requests received after this time will be answered the next business day.

Our quote is based on current inventory levels at the depot closest to your delivery location. Because inventory is subject to change, prices reflect current availability. When the current stock is depleted, prices may vary with the next replenishment.

We leverage our position as a major wholesaler to offer some of the most competitive pricing on the market.

Step 3: Your Purchase

To proceed, you provide us with a purchase order or email confirming your intent to purchase.  We will then reserve your container size and grade at the nearest depot, ensuring you get the next container off the stack that meets your criteria.

While we can’t guarantee a specific color, all of our containers are warrantied to be wind and watertight upon delivery.

At this stage, we require payment in full before coordinating delivery or pick-up.

Our Operations Team will contact you within one business day to confirm your order, accept payment, and arrange logistics.

Step 4: Ground Level Container Delivery or Depot Pick-Up

For delivery:  We partner with professional local transport companies that use specialized equipment, like tilt-bed trucks, to deliver your container directly to your specified ground-level location.

You can expect to know your delivery day within one or two days of placing your order, and the driver will call you when they are en route.  Plan on 4 to 7 business days for shipping container purchases.

Learn more about our delivery service here.

For depot pick-up:  If you prefer to transport the container yourself, we will provide a release number and pick-up information after purchase.   You can then go to the designated depot to have the container loaded on your truck.

Please be aware that  you are responsible for complying with all DOT and OSHA regulations during transport.

Option: If you’re purchasing your container for export

If you are buying a shipping container for export, we can coordinate a CSC Survey.  This certification, performed by a lilcensed surveyor at the depot, verifies the container is cargo worthy for international shipping.  Please note that surveys add 3-5 business days to the standard timeline.  Learn more about ocean export shipments here.

Understanding Shipping Container Grades

  • New, One-Trip:  These are technically used but have only made a one trip, loaded move from their manufacturing site in China to the US.  They are the closest you can get to a new container and have minimal cosmetic wear.
  • Cargo Worthy (CW):  These containers meet standards for international shipping.  They are structurally sound and sjitable for transport or high-demand storage.
  • Wind and Watertight (WWT):  This is a common used container grade option for storage.  These containers are guaranteed not to have leaks and are a reliable, budget-frinedly option for keeping contents safe and dry.

Custom Modifications for Your Houston Container

We can modify and customize your container to fit many needs.  Common modifications include:

  • Doors:  Roll-up doors, personnel doors, and custom entryways
  • Windows and Skylights:  Add natural light for offices or workshops
  • Climate Control:  Install insulation, HVAC units, and ventilation
  • Electrical:  Full electrical wiring for lighting, outlets, and equipment
  • Flooring:  Upgrade to durable, custom flooring options.

These customizations transform a standard container into a functional space for a business, hobb, or home.

Companies Save Time and Money

With the Port of Houston just minutes away, many local companies buy containers to import or export goods. These shipper-owned containers can be less costly and more practical for some shippers.

Furthermore, we work with surveyors who can appropriately certify containers for ocean shipping.

By owning your containers, your goods can be stored, sealed, and shipped overseas. Moreover, goods in sealed containers can be transported from their point of origin to their destination.

This saves money and time in two ways. First, no per diem charge is necessary when your container needs to remain at your facility or that of a customer.

Second, it avoids the cost of unloading and reloading goods at the destination port. Steamships require you to keep their containers at the port in some countries when embargoes are in place.

We can help you make the import/export process work.

A 42-unit modest housing complex with beautiful interiors was constructed almost entirely of shipping containers in Houston’s Fifth Ward.

  • Vertical Farms

Shipping Containers Houston: Your Top FAQs Answered

  • How Much Does a Shipping Container Cost in Houston?

Because Houston is home to one of the largest ports in the country, customers often assume containers are dirt cheap. While proximity to the port does help with availability, pricing is still dynamic and depends on several variables.

Proximity to the Port of Houston

Houston buyers have a distinct advantage. Since containers enter the US through the Port of Houston, transport costs to local delivery sites (like Katy, Spring, or Pearland) are generally lower than shipping them to Dallas or Austin. However, the base price of the container itself fluctuates based on global supply chain trends.

    Supply and Demand

Even with a major port nearby, supply levels change. If exports are high, steamship lines hold onto their containers, driving up prices for buyers. Conversely, a surplus of incoming cargo can lead to lower prices as depots look to clear space.

    Container Condition and Modifications

The price is heavily dictated by the container's grade. A "New (One-Trip)" container will always command a premium over a "Wind and Watertight" used unit. Additionally, if you need modifications—such as adding roll-up doors, HVAC for a site office, or ventilation—these customizations add to the final cost. At Container Management, Inc., we help you balance your budget with your specific functional needs.

  • What Should I Know About Buying Containers in a Coastal Climate?

Houston's climate is notoriously tough. High humidity, salt air, and the threat of hurricanes make the condition of your container critical.

    Rust and Corrosion

Living near the Gulf means salt air is a constant factor. When buying a used container, inspecting for deep rust is essential. While surface rust is common and cosmetic, deep structural rust can compromise the unit's integrity. We ensure our "Cargo Worthy" and "Wind and Watertight" containers still have solid structural integrity suitable for the region.

    Hurricane Readiness

A common question we get is, "Will this container survive a hurricane?" Shipping containers are engineered to be incredibly robust, often stacked eight high on ships rolling in heavy seas. However, an empty container can be moved by hurricane-force winds if not properly anchored. We can advise on anchoring solutions to ensure your investment stays put during storm season.

    "Wind and Watertight" Guarantee

In a city that experiences torrential downpours, a leaky container is useless. All containers we sell are guaranteed to be wind and watertight at the time of delivery. This is non-negotiable for protecting your goods from Houston's unpredictable weather.

  • Can I Inspect the Container at the Depot?

Many clients ask if they can drive down to the depot to pick out their specific container.

The short answer is no. The depots servicing the Port of Houston are secure, federally regulated facilities. Due to strict safety protocols and liability insurance requirements, access is restricted to authorized personnel and truck drivers only. It is not a retail environment.

However, we bridge this gap by adhering to strict grading standards. When you order a specific grade (like New or Cargo Worthy), we guarantee the unit you receive meets those specific criteria.

  • How Does Delivery Work in the Houston Metro Area?

Houston is massive, and delivery logistics vary depending on whether you are inside the 610 Loop or out in Conroe.

    Truck Access and Clearance

We use tilt-bed trucks to deliver containers. The driver backs into the site and gently slides the container off. For a 20ft container, we generally need about 65 feet of straight-line clearance. For a 40ft container, we need about 130 feet.

    • Urban Delivery: In dense neighborhoods like Montrose or Rice Military, narrow streets and low-hanging power lines can be a challenge.
    • Rural/Suburban Delivery: In areas like Tomball or Alvin, soft ground can be an issue.

    Site Preparation

This is critical in Houston, where the ground is often clay-heavy and soft, especially after rain. We recommend placing the container on a gravel pad to prevent it from sinking into the mud. A level, firm foundation ensures the doors operate correctly and the floor remains dry.

  • Do I Need a Permit for a Container in Houston?

This is one of the most complex aspects of buying a container in Texas. Regulations vary wildly depending on exactly where you are located.

    • City of Houston: The city has specific ordinances regarding shipping containers, especially if they are visible from the street or used as permanent structures (like container homes or offices). You may need a building permit.
    • HOAs and Deed Restrictions: Many Houston neighborhoods are governed by HOAs with strict rules against "unsightly" structures. Always check your deed restrictions before delivery.
    • Unincorporated Harris County: If you are outside city limits, regulations are generally more relaxed, but you should still check with the county engineering department regarding floodplain restrictions.

We strongly advise every customer to verify local zoning laws before purchasing.

  • How Can I Avoid Scams When Buying Online?

With the popularity of container projects rising, so has the number of fraudulent listings on marketplaces like Craigslist and Facebook.

    Red Flags

    • Prices too good to be true: If a 40ft container is listed for $1,500 delivered, it is likely a scam.
    • Cash-only or Wire-only payments: Scammers often demand untraceable payment methods.

    Secure Transactions

Protect yourself by using a credit card. Container Management, Inc. accepts secured credit card payments and absorbs the processing fees, so you don't pay extra for security. This offers you recourse in the unlikely event of a dispute—something wire transfers do not provide.
